Remain on high alert for illegal imports of conflict timber
UK merchants are advised to stay vigilant as reports suggest that conflict timbers are still being imported into the UK. By using third party countries, some importers are attempting to evade the ban. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, timber sourced in Russia and Belarus has been classified as illegal under the EU / UK Timber Regulations. The ban on imports, includes timber sourced in Russia and Belarus but exported via an alternative country.
Regular checks on importers are being carried out and the ban is being regulated by the OPSS (Office for products and safety standards)
According to TDUK “Should Russian timber products be found in the UK/EU market, the importer and all customers who have purchased these products may be subject to legal action, fines and reputational damage, which would also impact their trading partners in the manufacturing country”.
